Henry David Thoreau observed in Walden that "the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation." That is unquestionably true. 

Life is just really fucking hard. I've got almost six decade in the rear view mirror and I don't remember a single moment when, underneath the feigned complacence, I wasn't quietly desperate for something to just work out.
